Papers, 1813-1855.

Papers, 1813-1855. They consist of a ledger, 1813-1820, which includes an index; a letter book, 1831-1849; a checkbook from the Bank of Potomac, 1841-1849; a book containing copies of the legal proceedings, 1832-1851, brought by Stabler on behalf of the estate of his father, Edward Stabler, against Jonathan Butcher and others; some loose accounts and indexes; and four prescription books of Stabler and of the successor firm, E.S. Leadbeater & Co., dated 1841, 1842-1843, 1853, and 1854-1855. Materials are dated in Quaker style, and the letter book uses Quaker forms of address to some correspondents. It deals mostly with business matters, but includes personal letters, some discussing the disposition of Edward Stabler's estate and giving an inventory of the stock in his druggist shop, and letters discussing the organization of Quaker meetings in Virginia. The business letters deal with his trade in seeds, plants, drugs and medical goods. A frequent correspondent was David Landreth, his supplier of garden seeds, mostly vegetables, and rose bushes in named varieties. Two letters written to insurance companies contain contain small maps showing the location of the business on King Street, Alexandria.
